Increasing Wireless Throughput

I’ve begun to sit with my laptop in the family room again which means I had to go back to using wireless. I hate it. I’ve purchased more than one type of hardware, and still I can’t get the kind of throughput I want. Before today I was getting about 20kb/s on my 11Mbit connection. Insane! Today I had a brainstorm and ended up using ALL the wireless hardware I ever bought to get my network closer to usable.
